Hello, World!

Welcome to my home page.  It's a work in progress.  (Read:  it ain't perfect.)

It used to be that I was virtually the only Mathew with one 't' on the internet, but recently I saw another one, somebody over in England.  Well, maybe one day he'll be famous, and then I can pretend to be him.

In the last few years I have become interested in emergence, organization, collective systems, and social dilemmas.  I believe we need to come up with some new ways of thinking about old problems like poverty, racism and other forms of social injustice, if we want to see those problems get better.  For a long time I was kind of a technologist, believing that all it took to fix world problems was to invent, like Tom Swift, nifty new technologies.  But after seeing a lot of technological failures, learning about social dilemmas, and slamming into a number of brick walls, I changed my mind.

Technology has never been, and will never be, sufficient to end social injustice.  Injustice stems from fundamental human issues, rather than technical ones. I believe that all the hardest social problems can be solved - but only by paying attention to the fundamentally human issues in which they root.  As such I have a particular interest in psychology, spirituality, art, management practice, leadership, and other domains which explore human existence and human experience - especially in terms of wholeness and healing.
